I use several things to record (Guitar Tracks Pro, Sony Acid Music Studio, and Garageband). These are all fairly low cost softwares that pretty much do the same thing. I have two songs in my profile that I put together with Garageband. 'Concrete Jungle' is mostly just putting a bunch of loops together, but there are some guitar parts, keyboard parts that I added. 'A Break In The Rain' is more guitar and keyboards and fewer loops. The cover of 'Another Brick In The Wall' was done using Song Acid Music Studio. Essentially I downloaded a backing track from guitarbackingtrack.com and put it on its own audio track, then added all of the guitar parts.

I ran from my Digitech RP300 which has a USB connection directly into Music Studio to record. I normally use Garageband to jot down quick ideas.
You can do top quality stuff on there, you're just a bit more limited than if you used, say, Logic. The buzzing shouldn't be your mic.
Garageband can do top quality stuff. It really depends on your hardware.
Protools probably wont be worth the money to you. If you have a mac, you'd be better off with Logic.
Protools only works with digidesign hardware (which kind of sucks on the cheap end) or M-audio hardware if you get M powered protools. Logic works with anything and everything. Plus, logic has much better built in effects and instruments than protools. Protools is all about the extra pluggins. Yeah I used garageband for a year, its a great programme, some limitations like only playing in one key signature and tempo but its great for making backing tracks and recording audio for my youtube videos and very low on CPU, bought logic express last week so no more GB, what kind of tips are you looking for??? I made a post for DAW theads that were made a while ago if it helps but I never finished it,I'll see if I can find it This is all i got done but you will find the BOLDT packs and soundfonts helpful: Welcome to UGs offical Thread on Garageband About: Garageband is a DAW that comes with your mac in the i'life software package. It is a very simple programme to use for creating music in a matter of seconds, think of it as a simple version of Logic Studio.
It is still capable of creating great sounding songs but their some limitations that are downright frustrating. It is only compatible with Mac computers. The current version is Garageband 09, I will be explaining how to use Garageband 08 which is very similar.
Installing: If you honestly can't install this then you really shouldn't be reading about how to use the application but for the record: Insert your I'life disc and click full install which will install garageband and all the apple loops. It is vital that you then click the apple logo in the top left of the screen and open up the 'Mac OS X Software Update', this will update and fix all the known bugs. I am using GarageBand '08 Version 4.1.2 on OS x 10.5.8.
Well Drawn pretty much said all there is to say about GB. It's a great program that a lot of people talk smack about, but truth is: it kicks ass. If you take your time with every aspect and focus on getting a good mix with the best combination of compression and effects you can make a radio quality song with only the audio units right out of the box; no lie. Until you've used GarageBand to a point where you feel constrained by its limitations I wouldn't recommend upgrading. Once you've mastered GarageBand, it makes upgrading to Logic or Protools SOOO much easier. Your buzzing problem could because of several different things: - Are you using a cheap/old cable?
- Are you using a cheap/old interface? - Is your cable running parallel to any power supply cables?
